Letters and writings, 1898-1938.

Collection consists of ca. twenty-five letters to several correspondents including Auguste de Boeck, Florent Fels, Stephane Rey, and Willy Konincka. Of particular interest are two letters to Deschamps primarily relating to the publication of "James Ensor: Peintre et Graveur" which appeared in "La Plume" in 1899 (1898); one letter to Constantin Canesco mentioning his drawings for Emile Verhaeren's monographic study of the artist (1908); one letter to Dupierreue concerning paintings bought by the Musee de Bruxelles (1920); five letters to Georges Vriament, one discussing the conservation and framing of his "Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889" and another commenting briefly on the writer Garcia Calderon and on the importance of pure color (n.d.; 1925-1936); one letter to M. de Monzie, French minister of Education, thanking him for his nomination as a Commander of the Legion of Honor, reflecting with pleasure on the reception given to his retrospective exhibition at the Jeu de Paume a year earlier (1932), and speaking poetically of his love for Paris (1933); and one letter to Pierre Vandendries concerning the publication of "Petits Secrets." Also included is a brief statement praising the marine painter Marie Wambach de Duve and a signed essay entitled "Pour la defense des dunes de la cite" with corrections presumably in the artist's hand. Correspondence arranged chronologically.
